Seeks to address challenges to fish populations caused by federal hydroelectric dams.
The Department of the Interior announced on Thursday its plans to address the ongoing challenges that 14 federal dams have created along the Columbia River Basin. The dams have impacted salmon and steelhead populations due to preventing the fish from traveling along the river. The Interior Department will allow for a greater volume of water to flow around the dams without impacting power production.
Interior Secretary Deb Haaland highlighted the importance of preserving the basin, saying, “The Columbia River System is an invaluable natural resource that is critical to many stakeholders in the Basin. Today’s filing represents an important opportunity to prioritize the resolution of more than 20 years of litigation and identify creative solutions that improve conditions for salmon for years to come.”
